Gearing Up for Spring

Sooo as Spring has officially arrived, even though there is still currently a good 6 inches of snow on the ground ( Thanks a lot GROUNDHOG) I am looking forward to getting my 11th season as a Baseball Umpire underway.
I have been going to physical therapy for the past 3 weeks and I can feel my legs, quads, calfs and knee  all getting stronger and stronger with each passing day. I have also been slowly ramping up my workouts, and yesterday was able to complete my first mile.   Though I can't run just yet, I was walking at a brisk pace of 3.2 mph which resulted in a 18 minute mile. This is a huge accomplishment for me since, I hadn't been able to get on a treadmill since the injury to my knee back in February.
I have also continued to receive and expand my umpiring schedule and am now upto 20 games. My first will be April 8th on the bases. My first plate game will be Wednesday the 10th and I can't wait to get out there and show everyone just what I learned while I was down at Umpire School.
Its been a long winter. One of many life changes, improvements, experiences and a winter I will never forget. Though it is also one  that I wish would end very soon, so I can't get out there and be doing what I love.

So, this weekend is definitely one that I am glad is coming to a close. Saturday I received a phone call from someone inviting me out for a drink and to go see a local theatre production. Well lets just say I shouldn't have left my warm comfy room. I was dooped the person who called never showed up and I was left standing in the cold waiting for an hour and half.. now you may wonder why I waited soo long.. well its because I always believe that you should give someone the benefit of the doubt, but yeah for 90 minutes I waited and wondered what happened, until I finally came home and was in a bad mood. SO today, drove to meet someone I had been talking with for about a week and thought that there was a definite connection with them only to when we did meet have her pull a 180 and be totally bored, and uninterested in being with me. This is seriously starting to get on my nerves, the fact that I am a good genuine nice guy and yet women for the most part seem to not want anything ...
Soo today was a very light day. Had no control games or innings, but did have some time out on the drill field to get back into the habit of doing routine plays to get back into the swing of full umpiring.  Sadly I also started to realize how cutthroat this business can be.  Soo due to my injuries I haven't fully been at full health, as well as my other physical issues, have made my career has an umpire not the easiest of things to do.  I usually often in pain from my legs to my back and I do my best to push through it to continue to work my game, and due to the pain I may not look at athletic or graceful as other guys out there on the field, but I do my best.    One of the guys that I have gotten to know here at school, told me that sadly there have been a few guys that have snickered and made fun of me behind my back. He told me, not to worry about that, that the situation had been taken care of and that I should just focus on my game. To hear that a guy t...

A New Hall of Fame Class

As a young kid growing up I grew up on the heroes of the game, Ruth, Dimaggio, Mantle, Williams etc.  As I continued to grow up and watch the game of baseball grow and mature like I did, I was always excited to see what new legends were going to get to be immortalized into the Baseball Hall of Fame.   I've been lucky enough to visit the Hall of Fame on multiple occasions including as a kid with my dad, as a member of my high school baseball team on two occasions.   To now watch as more players that I grew up watching in the late 80's 90's and early 2000's it just reminds me of how wonderful this game truly and really is. I'll end this quick post with one of my favorite quotes from my favorite movie, Field of Dreams, "
